Only 11% of Internships end up getting full Time Work

The government backed  internship scheme called JobBridge has provided almost 7,000 internships since summer 2011 –  the majority with private sector employers. But only  797 of those who had completed the scheme had gone into full-time employment, with just 40 per cent of those (about 300) being given jobs with the companies where they served internships.

There were complaints  about companies such as Tesco using the scheme to get shelf stackers.  Minister Joan Burton  defended companies using the programme to find low-skilled workers…. she    said  “Low-skilled individuals have a right to access an activation measure that is specifically designed to improve their skills, enhance their experience and improve their chances of securing employment in the future,” .

Ms Burton also insisted opportunities would only be approved “if they can show that the intern will receive a broad and practical work experience that will involve significant learning outcomes for the intern”.

She said the Department of Social Protection was involved in the “continuous monitoring of internships to ensure that the placement provides appropriate training and development experience; and that appropriate mentoring and support is provided to the intern”.

Sinn Féin’s social protection spokesman Aengus Ó Snodaigh described plans to extend the scheme as “outrageous” and said it was “displacing real jobs”.

“The reality is that the JobBridge programme is facilitating job displacement and exploitation,” he said.

Plenty of IT Jobs in Dublin

Thousands of workers are are still moving to Ireland to work –    even though unemployment is high in Ireland – there is still  strong demand for people with specific IT and language skills.

The numbers of qualified Irish graduates is not enough to match the demand . There are more opportunities than there are people to fill them.

Seamus McEvoy, head of careers at Cork Universuty  said the overwhelming majority of their 50 computer science and 120 business information systems graduates from 2010 were in employment.

A spokesman for internet giant Google  – who are located on Barrow Street, Dublin, said the company currently had vacancies for people with Greek, Swedish, Hungarian, Portuguese, Danish and Hebrew language skills.

About 60% of Google’s  Dublin employees are from abroad. Dublin is still seen as a good place to live and work.

Transfering Jobseekers Benefit Abroad

With the current employment problems for many people in Ireland – some of you may be thinking of moving to the UK or elsewhere in the EU to look for work.
The good news is that anyone claiming Jobseekers Benefit can continue to get payments from Ireland for up to 13 weeks when you go to another EU country to look for a job.

You must be getting Jobseeker’s Benefit for 4 weeks before you can transfer it to another EEA member state. If you apply to transfer your Jobseeker’s Benefit, it will be paid directly to you – (bank account) . You will still be required to register with the employment services of the country where you have gone to look for work within a week of arriving .
You need to get a “Form U2”   from your Social Welfare office and bring it  to the employment  services of the country you are travelling to.
You can get a completed Form U2 from your local social welfare office.

The 13-week period of payment may be extended to 6 months in
exceptional circumstances. Also you may now transfer your JB payment more than once while you are unemployed provided you do not exceed the maximum period of 13 weeks

If you went to the UK without a U2 form – you will probably experience delays in getting UK  Jobseekers Benefits – and when you get it the rates are much lower in the UK.
For example – over 25 Single – UK rate is  £65.45  (about €78 Euro)  The   Irish Rate is €188 Euro – more than double!

Note:  Jobseekers Allowance is not payable outside Ireland – ! You can go on holiday for a maximum of 2 weeks and your Jobseekers Allowance will be paid when you return. You must notify your social welfare local office in advance of taking your 2 weeks holiday. It can also be paid on your return from representing Ireland in an amateur capacity an international sporting event.
