Internship Scheme Ireland

A new National Internship Scheme is being launched in July 2011.  The new Job Bridge website will show all the available internships –  eventually .
An internship can be a good way for people  to gain  experience in a working environment and to gain some relevant knowledge and skills required for  a particular career .

The internships will be  for a 6 month or 9 month period and  Interns will receive an allowance of €50 per week on top of their social welfare entitlement.

To be eligible for a place as an intern you must be unemployed and in receipt of Jobseekers Benefit, Jobseekers Allowance or signing for Social Insurance Contribution Credits for 3 months or more .

To try and prevent employers treating it as a free labour scheme – there are some rules in place.

The host organisation currently may not have vacancies in the area of activity in which the internship is offered.

Also the internship will not be provided to displace an employee. The scheme administrator reserves the right to review cases where it is reported that this is the case.

Jobbridge.ie  is the Internship website.
They could have chosen a better name – there is already a JobsBridge website that belongs to a US jobs site. Many people are looking for jobsbridge.ie and finding nothing.

FAS Can Make Unemployment Worse

In Ireland a report into  how State agencies encourage and assist the unemployed  to return to work has found that they can have the opposite effect .

The report,by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) says that those who are assisted by the State while on the dole were less likely to return to work than the average welfare recipient.

They found that participation in programmes run by FAS  increased the probability of subsequent employment by between 10 and 14 per cent.

However, Fás “activation interviews” with jobseekers resulted in the  chances of entering employment being about 17 per cent lower for those who went through the interview process.
Overall – the effect of FAS  was either zero, or at best weakly positive.

One strange rule in FAS  – is that someone  losing a job who had claimed unemployment benefit in the past is excluded from getting  assistance in job searches and training.

Another failing identified was that one in four of those unemployed people eligible for assistance by the State  were not  identified . Poor communications between the Department of Social Protection and FAS are  the primary reason for this.

Working in England

With unemployment rates rising here in Ireland – many people are looking to England for work. There is fairly bad unemployment in England – but it is a bigger economy and there are many more jobs available than here in Ireland.
With the Olympics in 2012 many construction workers are employed in the UK. House building is starting up in some areas of England again too.
There is no ban on employing nurses – unlike Ireland. There is a big Irish community in places like London , Luton, Coventry, Birmingham, Mamchester, Nottingham etc.
The first thing you need to do if you move to England for work – is to obtain or apply for your National Insurance Number.
Without a National Insurance Number you will not be able to work or claim benefits. Even if you are a student hoping to get summer work in England – you will need a National Insurance Number.
See here for Details of how to Apply for a National Insurance number
